What tools are used for thrombectomy?

An array of devices are used in thrombectomy. These include guide catheters, stent-retrievers, microcatheters, aspiration catheters, and aspiration pump systems. Large-bore catheters suction out the thrombus using negative pressure aspiration.

What is a thrombectomy device?

Simple thrombectomy devices are intracoronary catheters with a central aspiration lumen through which the thrombus can be extracted. These rapid-exchange devices are passed over an intracoronary guidewire into the IRA.

What is the most common device used for endovascular thrombectomy currently?

Due to these advantages, as well as their ease of use and rapid recanalization time, stent retrievers are currently the most frequently used mechanical thrombectomy devices in patients with acute ischemic strokes [17].

How do you aspirate a blood clot?

Blood clot aspiration is typically performed with basic syringes or electromechanical pumps. Basic syringes require two hands to operate, are volume limited and do not maintain consistent aspiration force.

What is a penumbra device?

The Penumbra System (PS; Penumbra, Alameda, Calif) is a new embolectomy device specifically designed to remove the thrombus in acute ischemic stroke secondary to large vessel thromboembolism. The device removes the thrombus through 2 mechanisms: aspiration and extraction.

What is the difference between an embolectomy and a thrombectomy?

A thrombectomy is the removal of a thrombus and an embolectomy is the removal of an embolus.

What is solumbra technique?

The Solumbra technique consisted of deployment of a stent retriever (Solitaire, Trevo or Mindframe) distal to the clot with an intermediate catheter (5 Max Ace, Ace 64 or SOFIA) at the clot face. Patient demographic data, stroke presentation, treatment details, and complications were recorded.

What is the Adapt technique?

Introduction The direct aspiration first pass technique (ADAPT) has been introduced as a simple and fast method for achieving good angiographic and clinical outcomes using large bore aspiration catheters for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS).

What is a embolectomy used for?

An embolectomy is surgery to remove an embolus from an artery or vein. An embolus is part of a blood clot that broke free. It can travel through your bloodstream and become stuck in another area.

How do you dissolve blood clots naturally?

Natural Ways to Treat Blood Clots Eat natural pineapple or take a nutritional supplement with bromelain. Increase your intake of other foods and drinks that may help dissolve blood clots such as garlic, kiwi, kale, spinach, red wine, and grape juice. Drink more water. Increase your exercise.

What is a penumbra aspiration thrombectomy?

Vascular Thrombectomy Penumbra’s Indigo® Aspiration System, launched in 2014, is designed to remove clot from arteries and veins in the peripheral vasculature, and for treatment of pulmonary embolism.

What is penumbra thrombectomy?

The Penumbra System® is a fully-integrated system designed specifically for mechanical thrombectomy. It is intended for use in the revascularization of patients with acute ischemic stroke secondary to intracranial large vessel occlusions.
