What is difference between single cross and double cross?

Unlike a single-cross hybrid, plants of a double-cross hybrid are not genetically uniform. Compared to single-cross hybrid production, production of double-cross requires an extra step. In production of organic hybrid seed corn, herbicides cannot be used.

What is top cross?

Definition of topcross : a cross between a superior or purebred male and inferior female stock to improve the average quality of the progeny also : the product of such a cross.

What are the uses of single crosses in plant breeding?

The single-cross parents are chosen on the basis of combining ability tests. The cross between two single crosses is made so that seed of uniform size may be harvested from a vigorous F 1 plant, thereby facilitating the production of hybrid seed and reducing the cost of the seed to the farmer.

Which is double cross hybrid of maize?

The double cross was the basic technique used in developing modern hybrid maize and has been used by commercial firms since. Jones’s invention was to use four inbred lines instead of two in crossing. Simply, inbred lines A and B made one cross, lines C and…

Why single crosses are more popular than double crosses?

Advantages from the use of single-cross hybrids are: I-Higher yielding ability than three-way or double-cross hybrids (2). 2-Greater uniformity than more complex hybrids. 3-Restorer lines or lines with Mendelian male sterility are not required to produce seed for the commercial hybrid.

What is 3way cross?

Definition of three-way cross : the first generation obtained by crossing a simple hybrid with a third form.

What is criss crossing?

1 : to mark with intersecting lines. 2 : to pass back and forth through or over. intransitive verb. 1 : to go or pass back and forth. 2 : overlap, intersect.

What is single cross hybrid maize?

single-cross hybrid. the type of hybrid that is produced when two different inbreds are cross-pollinated. , which is also known as a F1 hybrid, are inbreds. Each seed produced from crossing two inbreds has an array (collection) of alleles from each parent.

When two single crosses are crossed the resulting hybrid population is known as?

Single cross hybrids – result from the cross between two pure bred lines and produces an F1 (Filial 1, meaning “first offspring) generation called an F1 hybrid.

What is single cross maize hybrid?

What is Triple cross hybrid?

Triple cross hybrids – result from the crossing of two different three-way cross hybrids. Population hybrids – result from the crossing of plants or animals in a population with another population. These include crosses between organisms such as interspecific hybrids or crosses between difference races.

What is two way cross?

Two breeds are crossed and the offspring is used only for production purposes and is not used for breeding. The females not needed to produce purebred female replacements are mated to a breed with a high growth and slaughter quality. …
