What are “reflux changes?” Reflux, or “acid reflux”, means regurgitation of the acid stomach contents up into the esophagus. Prolonged exposure to the acid injures the squamous lining of the esophagus, causing characteristic reactive changes that the pathologist can recognize under the microscope.
